Houston has led the most successful
southern infiltration of a Yankee establishment that I have ever
known. Letters to the Innkeepers of the Inn at Manchester are
commonly addressed to “Frank, Julie, and Houston”. This Miniature
Schnauzer, from North Carolina, has traveled extensively, lived in
Brazil, survived a couple run-ins with motorized vehicles, and is
thankfully retired now in the charming New England village of
Manchester, Vermont. Guests here will find the whole family exuding
heartwarming southern hospitality amid their beautifully updated and
inherently comfortable Inn. They will also almost always find
this mature, sophisticated, gentledog
ensconced in one of many welcoming chairs in one of several
common rooms. And in the evenings, when Julie and Frank invite
guests to meet over a cocktail at their delightful bar in the den,
it’s an insider tip that Houston is especially partial to the Cheez-Its.
You won’t see Houston in the mornings however. He isn’t allowed in
the dining rooms during service of Frank’s exceptional breakfasts.
But the morning after I delivered his portrait, he miraculously
snuck into the dining room for the first time. I think once you have
your portrait painted, well, it just does something
for your sense of importance!
