Chessie_small.jpg (2276 bytes) SUNMARK CHESHIRE TIDE was my first Golden. Chessie was too smart, an independent spirit, who thought that tennis balls were a ridiculous substitute for the more admirable pursuit of squirrels and chipmunks, and well, anything that moved on four legs. Hers was my first dog portrait, and I credit her with the foundation of my current career as well as the inspiration for the book I’m working on, about the dogs and their portraits. Chessie passed away in April of ‘96. True to her natural instincts, she made a bed of leaves in the woods, went to sleep and died. She was eleven. I was devastated.

In 1989, I bred Chessie to Goldencharm Pistol Pete. She produced ten beautiful puppies. Out of that litter, I kept WATERMARK CHOPTANK TIDE. The Orvis Company bought the rights to this painting and ran a limited edition of 350 prints in their 1998 Christmas catalogue. The edition has sold out.

Choptank_small.jpg (3458 bytes) CHOPTANK was too big as conformation goes, but he thought he was a lapdog. We used to tease Chessie saying, “If you didn’t have enough brains for ten puppies, you shouldn’t have had ten puppies.” I learned after she died that if she only had nine brains to go around, she had eleven hearts and Choppy got the extra one. He became my rock. He was happy, gentle, easy, and like no other dog I’ve known, he was a hugger. In October '98 I lost Choppy to a big old tumor on his big old heart. Still hlives on in my heart

SUNKOTA PAINTED TIDE, "Paint" has been the model for four Orvis prints since 1999. We do our best not to let his fame go to his head !!
